Harold, was a native of Bellville, graduated from Bellville High School in 1974. Mr. Luhn married Rosie Reznicek in 1977 and they have two daughters. Even back then he had a forte for agriculture. He received the State Lone Star FFA degree in 1973 and then in 1975 received the American FFA Degree which is the highest degree you can earn as a FFA member. The Austin County Fair runs deep in the Luhn blood line. Before he was even a year old, Harold rode in his first Austin County Fair parade on horseback with his father and mother, Roger and Florence and hasn’t missed a fair since. During his youth, Harold exhibited livestock at the Austin County Fair. Following in his father’s footsteps, Harold was elected to the Austin County Fair Board of Directors in 1989 and served on the Executive Committee from 1994-1997. In 2003, Harold was elected President of the Austin County Fair and served a three year term. He then served as an advisory director on the board. Harold had always been active throughout the community. He was a founding member and past president of the Bellville FFA Alumni. For 10 years, he served on the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Go Texan Contest Committee and was Vice Chairman of that committee. Harold was a former director of the Austin County Farm Bureau and the Farm Service Agency. In 2006, Harold was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award from the Texas Association of Fairs & Events. He was selected from a group of nominees from all over the State of Texas. In 2007 he was Lions Club’s Citizen of the Year. “There is no way to know the countless hours that Harold had volunteered for the betterment of the Austin County Fair over the past four decades and one might ask why would someone spend that many hours working when you don’t get paid. The answer is simple: His heart was always in the right place, he believed in the youth of Austin County because they will forever be our future!” In December of 2008, Harold passed away after fighting a long battle with cancer. This scholarship will be awarded in memory of Harold Luhn from the Chuck and Rita Scianna Endowment Fund. The Harold Luhn Agricultural Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a qualified recipient that will pursue a course of study in the field of agriculture. Because the Austin County Fair Association was very dear to Harold, it will be a great honor to remember him through this scholarship.
